A Long Way from the Heart

It’s just a flesh wound
A long way from the heart
Nowhere near a crucifixion
It won’t even leave a scar
Before I can stop the bleeding
Before I lick my wounds
Like a dog returning to its vomit
I’ll be returning too
To make another swan dive
At the shallow end of the pool
It’s blind faith that keeps me leaping
Lord I must look like a fool
You’re waiting at the deep end
While I wade where things are safe
The dives I keep attempting
Leave me wounded, sore and scraped
But it’s always just a flesh wound
You’ll never touch my deepest part
There’ll be no resurrection
Without a crucifixion of my stony heart
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you
a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26)
