Your Song a Hymn

You make your song a hymn
So much more than a performance
But when does this begin
This sweet supply of ordnance
Is it transformed upon arriving at my ear
Before it starts to wind beneath my mind
Reaching down into my heart, into its deepest part
Where the light shines brightest, where the truest, purest worship starts
As self, dethroned in true contrition
Stays humbled at the thought
In spirit and in truth; those two conditions
The Holy Father has forever sought
Was it the good soil of your heart
That received with joy, the Kingdom’s seed
Fed and watered well, now bears its fruit
The song that waits upon your lips, draws life from roots secure and deep
Was this a song given in the night, softly whispered near your pillow
A gentle melody from heaven, a comfort as you sleep
Replacing tears and sadness with newborn sounds of gladness
As sighs of desperation give rise to inspiration and rest awaits, perfect and complete
This joyous sound proceeds unbound
When earthly words have fallen short
And the ones with ears are the ones who hear
Melodies of the heavenly sort
You make your song a hymn
Reminding me of the simplicity of my rediscovered youth
And the melody of heaven’s victory
Keeps us singing joyfully in spirit and in truth
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching
and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms
and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your
hearts to God. (Colossians 3:16)
