If it were up to only you
where would you draw the line?
Who would be given a second chance?
How would judgement be defined?
Could you control your anger
or would you simply start again?
Would you reserve your pardon
just for family and for friends?
Who would pay to repair
the damage that was done
and heal the wounds of the innocent
or raise the dead - if that could be done?
If living was forever
in your control and in your hands
how would you regard those who ignored you?
Could you understand?
Would the limits of your compassion
reach their breaking point at last?
Would you demand each one to stand and account
for the words and thoughts of their past?
If truth had been completely hidden
and you were the only one who knew
how would you shine light in the darkness
if it were up to only you
“. . . because the darkness is past, and the
true light now shineth.” (1 John 2:8)
