There had been an unspoken agreement among the congregation not to take the pastor, or the Scripture, literally when his sermon text was 1 Timothy 1:8.
“I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy
hands . . .”
Sensing the resistance, he made the suggestion, “If you have difficulty with the idea of praying according to this passage, try imagining that you’re not really praying but just taking another selfie - without your phone in your hand.”
"Without our phones! What crazy idea is he going to come up with next?”
“Next week we’ll be taking a closer look at Romans 16:16. Hope to see you then.”
